세계인들을 감동시킨 聖君 세종대왕 
- 금강경독송회에서는 나라사랑 실천의 일환으로
‘한국의 정신문화 시리즈’를 발간하여 현재까지
- <성웅 이순신>, <영원한 한국의 빛, 세종대왕>, <충 효 예> 3권을
현재까지 20만 6천권 발행하여 국내외에서 널리 배포하고 있습니다.
올해 상반기에는 세종대왕에 대한 독후감 쓰기 대회를 개최하여
미국 전역의 고등하교 중 3651개교에
에세이 대회 안내문과 책자 4권씩을 발송하였고,
다른 3000개 교에는 안내문과 책자 요약문을 보냈습니다.
또한 미국 전역의 대학과 ROTC 500곳에 책자를 4권씩 발송하고,
단 센터 60여 곳에 가각 100권에서 200권의 책자를 발송하였습니다.
특히 세종대왕 책자는 한국에 대한 역사자료와 수업자료를 찾던
미국의 고등학교에서 큰 호응을 받았습니다.
4월 15일까지 총 535개의 원고를 마감하고
5월 15일에 수상작을 발표하였습니다.

대부분의 미국인들과 마찬가지로
나 역시 지금까지 세종대왕에 대해 들어본 적이 없었으며,
내가 만일 단 요가에 나가지 않았다면 그에 대해 배우지 못했을지도 모른다.
단 요가 센터는 한국 체험의 기회를 주고 있는데,
왜냐하면 우리는 실내에서 신발을 벗고,
절을 하고,
바닥에 앉아서 차를 마시고,
한국말을 조금씩 사용하기 때문이다.
그것은 나에게 한국에 대해 더 배우고 싶은 관심을 불러 일으켜 주었다.
첫 번째 놀라움은
언어학자들이 한국의 알파벳(한글) 24자를
세계에서 가장 훌륭한 것으로 평가한다는 것을 배운 것이었다.
작가 존 맨은 한글이 여러 알파벳들 중에서도
고전 예술 작품의 위상을 갖춘 별이라고 말한다.
언어학자 제프리 샘슨은
한글 창제를 인류의 지적 업적 가운데
가장 위대한 것 중의 하나로 꼽았다!
한글은 5000년 한국 역사에서 으뜸가는 업적 가운데 하나이다.
한글에 대해 배우는 것은 나로하여금
백성들이 읽고 쓰는 것을 더욱 쉽게 하기 위해서
1443년에 글자를 창조했던 세종대왕의 놀라운 이야기와 만날 수 있는 기회를 주었다.
한글의 정밀함과 용이성은
한국이 97.9%의 문자해득률(literacy rate)을 달성할 수 있게 하였고,
세계시장에서 경쟁력을 가질 수 있게 만들어 주었다.
한글은 배우기가 쉬운 것뿐만이 아니라
창제된 지 500년 이상 지난 디지털 시대에도 적합하다!
한글은 한국이 세계 제2위의 PC 사용률을 가진
가장 통신이 발달된 나라 가운데 하나가 될 수 있도록 기여했다.
유네스코에서는 문맹퇴치에 기여한 한글의 가치를 인정하여 세종대왕상을 창설,
한국인들뿐 아니라 한글을 글쓰기 체계로 채택한
다른 나라 사람들에게도 이 상을 수여한다.
유네스코는 한글을 세계문화유산의 하나로 지정했다.
Korea.Net 사이트에서는 14분간 한글에 관한 멋진 온라인 비디오를 상영하며,
또 다른 사이트(http://www.leechvideo.com/video/view2723747.html)에도
한글에 관한 매혹적인 비디오가 있다.
한글은 계획적으로 만들어진데다
처음부터 그 제작원리가 밝혀진 유일한 글자이다.
5개의 기본 자음들은 음성기관을 본 따 과학적으로 만들어졌으며,
다른 자음들은 거기서 파생되었다.
세종은 서양보다 500년 앞서
음성기관과 글자 간의 관계를 연구하였다.
한국인들은 매년 10월 9일 한글날
그들의 문화에 공헌한 이 기념비적인 업적을 기리고 있다.
금강경독송회에서 내놓은 세종대왕 책은 내게 세종의 다른 업적들과 탁월한 인품을 알게 해주었다.
1418년에서 1450의 재위 기간에 그가 이룬 많은 업적들을 일람하다 보면 믿기지 않을 정도이다!
그의 헌신에는 단 하나의 목표가 있었다.
백성들을 위해 보다 더 나은 삶을 창조하고 싶다.
세종은 위대한 포부와 깊은 사랑을 지닌 사람이었다.
서구적인 관점으로 볼 때 그는
르네상스 시대의 인물이거나
철학자 왕으로 비쳐질 수도 있다.
하지만 그는 훨씬 더 위대한 인물이었다.
마치 부처님 같고 예수님 같은 인물,
어떤 군주와도 너무도 다른 희유한 인물이었다.
세종은 깊고 폭넓게 독서하던 학자였다.
다방면의 학문분야에서 지식의 진보를 촉진시키기 위해
학자들이 연구할 수 있도록 조정에 연구기관(집현전)을 창설했다.
그 결과로 15세기에 이루어진 60가지 세계 과학 업적 가운데
중국에서는 겨우 5건,
세계 다른 나라에서는 총26건의 성과가 있었는데,
한국에서만 29건을 해낸 것이다!
다음은 세종의 다른 업적들이다:
1. 세종은 인쇄술의 기술혁신을 지원했다.
세종의 지원 아래 발달된 활판 인쇄술은
1445년 독일의 구텐베르크의 것보다 앞섰다.
2. 세종과 학자들은 ‘칠정산’ 내외편을 간행,
새로운 측정 기준으로 사용했다.
그것은 당시 가장 인상적인 천문 과학 업적의 하나로 간주되고 있다.
당시에 중국과 아라비아만이 그렇게 정확한 천문계산을 해냈다.
3. 대신들의 반대에도 불구하고 장영실('천민계급'의 과학자)을 등용시켰다.
후에 장영실은 세계 최초의 측우기, 해시계, 물시계를 제작했다.
측우기는 나라 전역에 설치되었고,그 결과 정확한 강우량이 유럽인들이 우량측정계 사용하기 200 년전부터 기록되고 있었다.
4. 세종은 의학, 농업, 천문학 분야를 지원하여 혁명을 일으켰다.
5. 그의 지원 아래 학자들은 의학백과사전을 출간하였다.
6. 문학과 예술을 장려했다.
7. 세종은 오늘 날까지도 사용되고 있는 악보(정간보)를 만들었다.
세종이 뛰어난 것은 단지 그가 이룬 많은 업적 때문만이 아니라
신뢰할만한 인품 때문이다.
겸손과 백성에 대한 헌신, 그리고 그가 품었던 이상은
역사 속 어느 군주와도 견줄 수가 없다.
이 밖에도 세종은
(1) 백성들의 생활수준 향상
(2) 관비 부부 출산 휴가
(3) 사법제도 및 전세 제도 개혁
(4) 죄수들의 권리 존중
(5) 증언일치제
(6) 연민과 용서
(7) 검소한 궁중생활
(7) 야만인으로 치부됐던 유목민들과의 평화 정책을 주도하고 후원했다.
세종은 단지 한국의 다른 군주들뿐만 아니라
다른 나라의 통치자들과 비교해도 탁월하다.
많은 업적만으로도 그는 세계사적 위치를 얻었다.
하지만 세계 지도자들 가운데
그를 유일하지는 않더라도 희유한 존재로 만드는 것은
그의 인품이다.
이런 자질은 어느 나라의 지도자에게서도 발견하기 어려운
성인의 본성을 보여준다.
세종은 도교적인 지도자 개념을 보여주었다.
대부분의 지도자들은 국민이 자신들을 위해서 존재한다고 생각하고
다른 민족들과 전쟁하기 위해서 엄청나게 재정을 낭비한다.
그래서 세종이 자신의 역할을 백성에게 봉사하는 자로서 보고
타 민족들과 평화를 추구했던 점이 돋보이는 것이다.
흉년이 들었을 때 먹지 않으면서
백성과 그 고통을 함께 나누는 쪽을 선택했다는 사실에서
부분적으로나마 그의 인품의 깊이가 보인다.
세종은 지도자가 어떠해야 되는지를 단적으로 보여준다.
그가 보여준 모범은 우리 각자가 우리의 지도자들에 대해
그들을 넘어서 더 많은 것을 기대하도록 이끌어 주는 빛이다.
그런 점에서 그는 지금도 우리 모두를 위해 봉사하고 있는 셈이다.
세종은 한국의 영웅에 머무르지 않는다.
그는 널리 알려져야 할, 감동적이고 모범적인 그의 삶을
500년 이상 지난 지금까지도 세계 모든 곳에서 따라가야 할 인류의 영웅이다.
불과 몇 나라만이라도 그와 같은 이상과 인품을 가진 지도자에 의해 이끌어진다면
세상은 얼마나 달라질까.
한국은 전설적인 지도자들과 경이로운 알파벳을 포함해서
과거와 현재에 대해 말할 것이 너무나도 많은 나라이다.
하지만 많은 서양인들이 한국의 풍부한 역사를 알지 못한다.
그렇기 때문에 세종대왕에 대한 금강경독송회의 책은
대단한 서비스를 하고 있는 셈이다.
이 책 덕분에 부르클린 하이츠의 단요가 센터의 학생들 속에
세종에 대한 존경심이 일고 있다.
그 관심에 부응하여, 부르클린 하이츠 단요가 센터는
5월에 시작해서 매월 한 번씩 만나는 코리아 클럽을 창설했다.
그 목적은
영화와 책 토의, 코리아타운에 있는 서점과 레스토랑 들리기 등을 통하여
한국 문화(역사, 영웅들, 언어, 예술, 음식 등)를 배우는 것이다.
만일 충분한 관심이 있다면
나중에 단요가 지도자들이 이끄는 한국 방문을 구상해볼 수도 있다.
밝은 세상을 만들고
세계 평화를 촉진시킬 수 있는 정보를 펴도록 하면서
한국과 미국 간의 교두보 역할을 하는 것.
이것이 세종대왕의 삶에 경의를 표하는 것이고,
그가 가슴에 품었을 목표일 것이다.
- King Sejong sponsored innovations in printing. The moveable printing process
- developed under King Sejong’s sponsorship was more advanced than the printing
- type developed by Gutenberg in Germany in 1455.
- King Sejong and his scholars published “A Calculation of the Motions of the Seven
- Celestial Determinants” that used new standards of measurement.
- It is regarded as one of the most impressive astronomical achievements of its day.
Only China and Arabia performed such accurate astronomical calculations. - He promoted Chang Yongsil (a scientist of “low class”) over objections of
- the aristocrats. Chang later created the world’s first rain gauge, a sundial,
- and a water clock. Rain gauges were installed throughout the country
- and accurate records of rainfall were kept 200 years before Europeans began the practice.
- King Sejong sponsored revolutions in medicine, agriculture, and astronomy.
- He facilitated publication of a medical encyclopedia created by his scholars.
- He encouraged literature and the arts.
- King Sejong created a form of musical notation still used today.
- An improved standard of living
- Maternity and paternity leave for government servants
- Reform of the criminal justice system and land tax
- Respect for the rights of prisoners
- Consensus rule
- Compassion, forgiveness, and simplicity in the court
- Peace with nomadic peoples considered “barbarians”

Like most Americans, I had never heard of King Sejong and I probably would not have
learned about him had I not joined Dahn Yoga. The Dahn Yoga centers provide a little
experience of Korea because we remove our shoes, bow, have tea sitting on the floor,
and speak a few Korean words. That sparked my interest in learning more about Korea.
King Sejong and the Korean Alphabet
The first surprise was to learn that linguists consider the 24-character Korean alphabet (“hangul”)
to be the best in the world. Author John Man says that hangul is a star among alphabets
with a status normally reserved for classic works of art. Linguist Geoffrey Sampson ranks
the invention of hangul as one of the greatest achievements of mankind! Hangul is considered
one of the crowning achievements of Korea’s 5,000-year history.
Learning about hangul led me to the discovery of the remarkable story of King Sejong the Great
who created the alphabet in 1443 to make it easier for his people to read and write.
The elegant simplicity of hangul has allowed Korea to establish a literacy rate of 97.9%,
helping to make it competitive in the global market. Hangul is not only simple to learn
but is also well-suited to the digital age – over 500 years after its creation! Hangul
contributed to Korea’s becoming one of the most wired nations with the second highest PC usage
in the world.
UNESCO created the King Sejong Literacy Prize to recognize the value of hangul in fighting illiteracy,
not only for Koreans, but for other peoples who adopted it as their writing system.
UNESCO designated hangul as part of the world cultural heritage.

Hangul is the only alphabet designed intentionally and with its principles
documented from its inception. Its five primary consonants are scientifically
based the vocal organs and the other consonants are derived from those.
King Sejong was 500 years ahead of the West in studying the relationship
between vocal organs and letters. Koreans celebrate this monumental
contribution to their culture each year on Hangul Day, October 9.
King Sejong’s Other Accomplishments
The book King Sejong the Great by the Diamond Sutra Recitation Group
introduced me to King Sejong’s other accomplishments and remarkable character.
The catalog of his many achievements during his reign from 1418 to1450 defies belief!
His devoted work had one goal – to create a better life for his people.
King Sejong was a man of great vision and deep love. In the West,
he would be considered a Renaissance man and a philosopher king,
but he was much more. He was a Buddha-like or Christ-like figure –
so rare for any monarch.
King Sejong was a scholar who read deeply and broadly. He created a hall for scholars
in his court to facilitate advances in knowledge in a wide variety of disciplines.
The result was that of the 60 scientific achievements in the world in the
15th century, 29 were made in Korea while only 5 were made in
China and 26 in the rest of the world!
King Sejong’s other accomplishments include the following:
King Sejong’s Character
King Sejong is remarkable not only for his many accomplishments,
but because of his sterling character. His humility, devotion to his people,
and vision may be unequaled by any monarch in history.
King Sejong’s rule sponsored:
King Sejong stands above not just other Korean monarchs, but rulers
elsewhere. His many accomplishments alone earned him a place in world history.
However, it is King Sejong’s character that makes him rare if not unique
among the world’s rulers. These qualities reveal a saint-like nature rarely
found in any head of state. King Sejong embodied Taoist concepts of leadership.
Most rulers think that their people exist to serve them and spend vast fortunes
waging war on other peoples. So, for King Sejong to see his role as one of service
to his own people and to seek peace with other peoples is remarkable.
The depth of King Sejong’s character is revealed, in part, by the fact
that he chose to share times of famine with his people by not eating.
Conclusion
King Sejong defines what a leader should be. His example is a guiding light
which invites each of us to excel and to expect more of our leaders.
In that way, he continues to serve us all. King Sejong is not just a Korean hero.
He is a world-class hero who should be widely known and whose inspirational example
should be followed everywhere now even over 500 years later.
What a different world it would be if just a few nations were led now
by people of comparable vision and character.
Korea has so much to offer in terms of its past and present -- including its
legendary leaders and wonderful alphabet. Yet,
many people in the West are unfamiliar with Korea’s rich history. So,
the Diamond Sutra Recitation Group book about King Sejong
is providing a great service. It inspired admiration for King Sejong
among students at the Brooklyn Heights Dahn Yoga center.
One student expressed a desire to get the book published by DSRG
on Admiral Yi Sun Sin who is considered the world’s best admiral.
In the 14th century, he created the world’s first armored battleship.
With just 13 ships, he defeated 330 ships of the Japanese Navy.
He was also a leader of great vision and character who was devoted to his people.
In response to that interest, the Brooklyn Heights Dahn Yoga center
collaborated with the New York Diamond Sutra Recitation Group
to create the Dahn Yoga Korea Club which will meet once a month
beginning in May. The purpose is to learn about Korean culture
(history, heroes, language, arts, food, etc.) through films, books,
discussions, and trips to bookstores and restaurants in Korea town.
Prizes will be awarded each month to the winner of a contest or drawing.
Later, a contest will have 10 questions about King Sejong b
ased on the book King Sejong The Great. If there is sufficient interest,
it may be possible later to arrange a trip to Korea led by Dahn Yoga masters.
Dahn Yoga and the Diamond Sutra Recitation Group are serving
as a bridge between Korea and America,
helping to spread information that can create an enlightened world
and foster world peace. These are goals that honor the life of King Sejong
and which he would have embraced.
